Walker Doubleday is the owner of Doubleday Guitars, where he hand builds high end boutique electric guitars. He strives to make the best of the best, to stand out from a market flooded with decent guitars.

Originally from Houston and a 7th generation Texan, Walker graduated from Texas State University in San Marcos and has stayed in the Hill Country ever since. He moved to Austin to work for another well known guitar manufacturer, fell in love with the city and its people, and decided to grow his roots here.

Music, he says, is a big part of Austin’s DNA, and he is honored to be a part of it. Alongside building guitars, he has helped support several music festivals and events across the city, and he is now building out the studio area of his shop to eventually host and live stream local bands.

Walker answered these questions in writing, in September 2026.

What do you make or do, in plain words?

I am the owner of Doubleday Guitars, where I hand build high end boutique electric guitars. I strive to make the best of the best, to stand out from a market flooded with decent guitars.

How did you land in Austin, and why did you stay?

I’m originally from Houston, a 7th generation Texan. I graduated from Texas State University in San Marcos and have stayed in the Hill Country ever since. I moved to Austin to work for another well known guitar manufacturer, and fell in love with the city and its people and decided to grow my roots here.

What is the thing you have made or done here that you are proudest of?

I’m very proud of every guitar that I’ve created here, and have also helped support several music festivals and events across the city. Music is such a big part of Austin’s DNA and I’m honored to be a part of it.

What is one opinion you hold about Austin that most people here would argue with?

Many people say that Austin’s live music scene is dead. I disagree with that. There is still a vibrant live music scene here, it’s just evolving. I really feel that the city needs to support its live musicians even more than it already does, to keep this city as their home.

What are you working on next?

I’ve been building out the studio area of my shop, and have plans to eventually host live performances of local bands to be live streamed over social media. The goal is to help promote small bands as well as my small business.

Where do you actually eat, drink, or hang out? Name real places.

My wife Amanda and I love to venture out into the greenbelt. We’ve found several spots off the beaten path where we like taking our boxer Ladybird. As for a date night, the Salty Sow is high on our list, and the creamy jalapeño dip at Chuy’s is hard to beat. You might catch us playing some pool at the Lil’ Darlin from time to time.

What would you tell someone who moved here last week?

Explore the city in every direction. This place has a lot to offer, but you have to know where to look. Also be courteous and kind to others. We need to keep the southern hospitality atmosphere alive.
