About

Hi, I’m Carissa. I write a weekly newsletter about Austin.

I grew up in Pennsylvania, moved to Austin for what was supposed to be one year, and stayed for seven. The newsletter is the version of Austin I write to a friend who just landed at the airport and asked me what to do this weekend.

It’s not comprehensive, and it’s not a tourism site. It’s three things, eat, do, and know, written every Thursday morning from my kitchen on Riverside.

Before this I was a speech-language pathologist. Before that, a college softball player. Now I have a toddler named Severus and another boy on the way. Most weeks the newsletter is what I would have wanted to read the Saturday before.

What you actually get
Eat

One place worth crossing town for, with the exact thing to order and the catch. A verdict, not a list of everywhere.

Do

One thing worth rearranging a Saturday for, with the timing, the parking, and an honest read on whether it is actually worth it.

Know

One thing happening in the city that matters, in plain English, with what it means for you and what you can do about it.

How it works
  1. 01One edition, every Thursday morning. A five-minute read, sent at 7am Central. No second send if you do not open the first.
  2. 02Three sections, always. Eat, do, and know, in the same order every week, so you always know where to look.
  3. 03Free, and the archive stays free. Every past edition lives on the site, free to read forever.
  4. 04Reply and I read it. Hit reply on any edition. It comes straight to me, and I answer most of it within a few days.
Why you can trust it

Independent and opinionated.

The recommendations are mine, and I say when to skip a place. Specific over comprehensive, every week.

Sponsored sections are always marked.

I write them in my own voice, and I do not run anything for a place I would not send a friend to. The full policy is on the disclosures page.

Researched, ranked, and dated.

The longer picks live in the guides: ranked from real research, honest about what I left off, and stamped with when they were last updated.
