Amano Pottery Studio
Week of October 1, 2026
What do you make or do that a neighbour would be surprised is happening here?
“Amano Pottery is a clay studio, but more than that, it's a community space, and a creative hub where people come to disconnect from the outside world and connect with each other. Walk in on any given day and you'll find retirees working the wheel next to college students, conversations drifting between English and Spanish, and a vibe that's easygoing and unhurried. Some days it's a debate over the newest sushi spot in town; other days everyone's swapping glazes and comparing hauls from the pottery supply store. That mix of ages, backgrounds, and languages is what makes the room feel less like a class and more like a neighborhood, all connected by the same impulse to slow down, work with their hands, and make something.”
What brought you to open where you did, and what is different now?
“We chose this spot because we loved the neighborhood, it had the kind of community feel we wanted Amano to be part of. What's different now isn't the neighborhood itself, it's us: we've gone from being new to actually belonging here. We've taken part in neighborhood-wide events, gotten to know the other small business owners around us, and built real relationships with the people next door instead of just sharing a block with them. It's gone from a spot we picked to a community we're genuinely part of.”
One other Austin place near you that you send people to?
“Although Amano is a space to create, we don't have the capacity to sell finished work in-store. Because of that, we often send people to Golden Mean, a neighboring shop that carries a curated selection of vintage wares, ceramics, jewelry, and other unique gifts and objects. Grace, the owner, has a great eye and will help you find exactly what you're looking for. I bought a leather bookmark there once that turned out to be a little too good! A friend of mine loved it so much she "borrowed" it and never gave it back, and then her sister liked it so much *she* ended up with it. That's the kind of place it is: everything feels handpicked, and once you bring something home, don't be surprised if it doesn't stay yours for long.”
