Tone Royal
professional announcer and musician
Tone Royal has a day named after him. The City of Austin proclaimed September 25, 2026, Tone Royal Day, recognizing his career as a hip-hop artist, songwriter, performer, and announcer.
He was twice crowned champion of Austin’s Rap For A Stack competition, and he received Album of the Year at the 2019 ATX Hip-Hop Awards for his EP Late. He has shared stages with GZA, Rakim, and Atmosphere.
Tone answered these questions in writing, in October 2026.
What do you make or do, in plain words?
I’m a professional announcer for the Texas Longhorns and the NBA, and a musician by the name of Tone Royal. I live my life on a microphone, haha.
How did you land in Austin, and why did you stay?
I moved here in 2013 to attend the University of Texas. After I graduated, I loved the city so much that I decided to stay. It’s always felt like home to me.
What is the thing you have made or done here that you are proudest of?
I’m incredibly honored to be one of the voices of the Longhorns, it’s my favorite thing. Outside of Austin, being selected to announce the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches in Atlanta was a huge honor. Getting to represent Austin on the world stage was something I’ll never forget.
What are you working on next?
I’m currently recording new singles that I’m really excited to release. I’ve also stepped away from some of my announcing jobs to go full-time as a freelance emcee. I’ve worked at the highest levels and built an amazing career over the past 15 years, but it’s still scary and exciting to take that leap.
Where do you actually eat, drink, or hang out? Name real places.
Pinballs for drinks and hanging out, Casino South to shoot pool, and Chalmers to catch the game. Sushi Junai has great sushi, Saps Ver Fine makes garlic chicken that is legitimately one of the best meals I’ve ever had, and at Don Juan’s, get the carne guisada plate.
What would you tell someone who moved here last week?
Avoid I-35 between 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Trust me.
What is one opinion you hold about Austin that most people here would argue with?
San Antonio tacos are wayyyy better.
